1. Characterization of operating safety

Dependability is perhaps first and foremost a state of mind, rather than a set of methods. What characterizes this spirit?

1.1 Be realistic about the entities you are dealing with

A component or sub-system can fail. A person may perform an activity other than that prescribed. Environmental conditions may be unfavorable, etc.

Dependability means not considering a system solely in terms of its specifications, as if its behavior and effects were never to be anything other than those for which it was designed.
