4. Metallic thin films: Drude model

In a simplified but nonetheless correct approach, metallic thin films can be described by the Drude model.

This model is based on the free-electron approximation of classical physics. It links the optical properties of materials to their electrical properties. First, the characteristic quantities describing electrical properties will be introduced.

4.1 A few notions of electrical conduction

A metal is characterized by the existence of delocalized or free electrons, i.e. electrons that are not bound to an atom. These electrons form the material's electron cloud and can be set in motion by the application of an electric field.
