ABSTRACT

Flexible floor coverings are manufactured products laid on finished work to lend it esthetic, safety, comfort or insulation qualities. By contrast, resin-based floor coverings are made in situ. This article first deals with the various types of flexible floor coverings (textile, plastics, rubber or linoleum) and classifies them according to the criteria (comfort, durability, safety and budget) that orient choice. Installation modes for these floor coverings are reviewed, looking especially at their preparation, bonding, specific systems and defects they are prone to, along with corresponding maintenance methods.

 INTRODUCTION

With the exception of resin-based cast floor coverings, which are produced in situ and are covered in the "Industrial floor coverings" file [C3684] , a floor covering (RoS) is a manufactured product applied to a finished structure to give it specific qualities. These qualities may be aesthetic or concern other aspects such as safety, acoustic insulation, comfort, ease of maintenance, etc.

Our presentation is limited to resilient floor coverings used in building markets. French consumption of – floor coverings, all products combined (tiles, resilient flooring, parquet, laminate and resins) – amounted to 250 million m 2 in 2007.
