3.1.1 Metal melting furnaces

  • Blast furnace and cupola furnace (ironmaking)

    They consist of a vertical cylindrical or conical wall. The charge is loaded from above with coke. Combustion air, blown through nozzles, is sometimes preheated by electrical processes (resistors or plasma torch) or by energy recovery from hot gases. The liquid metal flows through an orifice at the bottom of the furnace.
