Favorable areas are shown on the tidal range map (figure 8 ). Most are located between the Cotentin peninsula and the Bay of Saint-Brieuc. Significant potential also exists between Dieppe and Boulogne.
Theoretical energy potential exceeds 1,000 TWh/year. Supplying 100 TWh/year with 30 GW is economically and technically realistic, and requires nearly 3,000 km 2 of basins along 200 to 300 km of coastline, with barely visible dikes some 20 km from the coast. The presence of the Channel Islands suggests two large basins to the west of the Cotentin peninsula (the Chausey Islands site and the Saint-Brieuc site) and one large basin between Dieppe and Boulogne (the Somme site) (figure
