It is possible to place turbines on the seabed to transform the energy of ocean currents into electrical energy, just as wind turbines use the energy of the wind.

Europe's potential for tidal power is around 12.5 GW, which could produce 48 TWh/year, or roughly the equivalent of 12 900 MW nuclear reactors .
