2.1 Overview and typology
While global coal production grew by an average of just 0.9% a year between 1980 and 2000, it increased by a staggering 9.9% a year between 2000 and 2010. This growth has not been equally shared by all countries. The decline of some countries and the growth of others has created a new hierarchy of producers worldwide (table 4 ) .
