
1. Current hydrogen market situation
Global hydrogen consumption and production will reach 94 million tonnes (Mt) in 2021, up from 90 Mt in 2020 . Consumption has been rising steadily for the past 20 years. It has increased by over 50% since 2000.
1.1 Hydrogen production
Most hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels. In 2021, around 62% of global hydrogen production will come from natural gas steam reforming, 19% from coal gasification (mainly in China) and 18% from hydrogen production in refineries as a by-product of reforming
