3. Radiative exchange between opaque materials

3.1 Introduction

In this section, we study radiative transfer between surfaces separated by a transparent medium. This situation is widely encountered in practice; indeed, there are many industrial applications where radiative exchange between surfaces is little affected by the medium separating them.
