The development of the bypass transition would suggest that the development of streaks always has a destabilizing effect in the boundary layer. However, some experimental observations contradict this interpretation. Arnal & Juillen had observed that in the presence of high levels of residual turbulence in the incident flow (the FST), the turbulence transition point is effectively shifted upstream compared to a situation with low FST levels.
