5. Safety

Note :

the reader may wish to refer to the Safety and Protection section of the Nuclear Engineering treatise.

As with other types of reactor, safety provisions aim to prevent the spread of radioactive products by providing three watertight and resistant barriers: the cladding of the fuel needles, all the circuits containing the primary coolant, and the enclosure that encloses the reactor and its circuits.

The detailed analysis depends on the technological solutions adopted for each type of reactor, but the assessment criteria are basically the same.

Project specifications, monitoring and shutdown systems, and operating rules take into account the specific features of fast breeder reactors.
