4. Conclusion

This non-exhaustive overview to date (2022) shows the dynamism underway among SMR developers. This enthusiasm is part of the revival of nuclear energy eleven years after the Fukushima accident. Safety is naturally at the heart of designers' concerns, with intrinsically safe designs and passive safeguard systems being adopted wherever possible. If the challenges outlined in paragraph 1.3 are met, SMRs could be a relevant response to decarbonized electricity generation and new uses for nuclear power.
