2. Complementary safety assessments

2.1 Context

Complementary safety assessments must be placed in the general context of the ongoing quest to improve the safety of French nuclear facilities. Safety improvements are based in particular on :

  • feedback from experience;

  • ten-yearly safety reviews, involving a reassessment of safety rules and requirements (known as "safety baselines") in line with advances in knowledge, and the adaptation of the plant to new requirements;

  • the development of new reference systems or the reassessment of existing ones, independently of safety reviews (for example, with regard to the consideration of severe accidents or the assessment of flood hazards).
