5. Conclusions

The RBMK reactor concept originally suffered from serious safety shortcomings. Modifications made to Russian and Lithuanian reactors have corrected the most glaring defects, making a repeat of a Chernobyl-type accident unlikely . On the other hand, the exact status of any modifications to Ukraine's Chernobyl No. 3 reactor is very poorly known. On the other hand, the economic difficulties faced by the three countries concerned are holding back the implementation of all the measures announced. The many differences between these reactors, even within the same generation, make a specific safety study necessary for each of them....
