4. Storage

The objective for short-lived waste repositories (or repositories containing traces of long-lived radionuclides) is to isolate the storage waste packages from the biosphere in such a way that neither radiation from the packages nor any radionuclides that might escape from them reach man for several centuries. Safety analysis involves imposing limits on the characteristics of the packages and on the overall radionuclide content of the repository, particularly in terms of long-lived alpha and beta emitters.
