2. Interactions between radiation and matter

The biological effect of irradiation depends on the non-uniform, discontinuous distribution of absorbed energy on the microscopic scale . On the one hand, it is localized around the trajectory of the particle or radiation causing direct effects, and on the other, energy transfer takes place discontinuously during random reactions between radiation and electrons in the medium causing indirect effects.
