5.1 Gas-cooled fast reactors (GFR)
Although studies on this concept began in the 1990s, no reactor of this type has yet been built.
The GFR aims to combine the advantages of a fast neutron spectrum, in line with the objectives of saving uranium resources and minimizing final waste, with the high temperatures required for efficient electricity production. Major design options have been defined as part of studies financed by the European Commission for a reactor project known as GCFR (Gas Cooled Fast Reactor):
