5. Conclusion

This article covers the essential concepts associated with STL files, used in particular in the additive manufacturing sector. The fundamental elements for understanding, exploiting and using this model have been provided. Methods for calculating the surface area of an STL geometry and the volume included within the mesh were discussed. Finally, the main defects and key criteria for quantifying the quality of an STL geometry were detailed.

Bear in mind that an STL file is the result of an approximation of the initial geometry. Saving a nominal geometry in discrete STL geometry leads to a break in the digital chain and the loss of a great deal of information. To overcome these drawbacks, alternatives have been proposed.
