2. Characteristics and applications of nanoparticles

Nanoparticles are nano-sized, i.e. on the scale of atomic particles. The manufacture of new nanoscale materials can confer new properties compared with the same materials, of the same composition but larger in size. A typical example is graphite-like carbon compared with nanotubes (figure 1 ).
