3. Polypropylene-based lamellar nanocomposites

Over the last fifty years or so, thermoplastics have become essential materials in our daily lives, both in commodity applications and those requiring higher performance.

Among the so-called commodity polymers, we can mention polyolefins, essentially polyethylenes and polypropylenes, which are low-cost, easy to process, and offer an interesting compromise of mechanical, barrier and surface properties. However, their use is limited when mechanical properties, particularly rigidity, and/or mechanical temperature resistance are required. In this case, the use of a more technical but more expensive polymer is a solution. Another solution is to incorporate reinforcements into the commodity matrices to compensate for the lack of properties, without dramatically increasing the cost of the products; in this case, we speak of thermoplastic composites.
