4. Applications and outlook

Numerous applications are envisaged for these highly confined and intense sources. Although they offer the prospect of future developments, they are generally confined to research laboratories. The two most widely used properties are the electromagnetic field confinement effect (and consequently the associated exaltation) and the antenna effect, i.e. the coupling between the near field and the far field and vice versa.
