This article provides an overview of the MIG/MAG welding process. The main process components and consumables are reviewed.

The various process operations (metal transfer modes in the arc) and their uses are described. Part of the article is devoted to the defects that can occur during MIG/MAG welding and their origins. Hygiene and safety are also discussed.

A rich source of information is available on the INRS website. This is an essential aspect to consider when setting up a welding station in a workshop. Finally, developments in the process are also described. Technological advances linked to power electronics enable very fine control of welding parameters and extend its capabilities, permitting assemblies previously considered unfeasible.
