4. Outlook
As explained in the first part of this article, 3D drilling models from the literature are often able to reproduce all the phenomena involved in the cutting zone. However, to achieve satisfactory results for drilling depths of just a few tenths of a millimetre, a large number of adjustments are required, based on experimental tests. In addition, the use of a partially or totally Lagrangian formalism results in considerable CPU computing times, due to the remeshing procedures required to maintain satisfactory mesh quality. With such models, the low simulated times make it impossible to study the thermomechanical phenomena involved in an industrial drilling operation lasting several seconds.
