2. Searched functions and properties

The functions required of a mechanical part in service can be very diverse:

  • resistance to static forces, mostly in the field of reversible (elastic) behavior, at room temperature, at lower temperatures (cryogenic applications) and more often at higher temperatures ;

  • resistance to dynamic stress (fatigue) [97] ;

  • resistance to Hertzian pressure, friction and wear ;

  • service life, operating reliability ;

  • resistance to the environment (other parts in contact, atmosphere, humidity, etc.) ;

  • more specific functions: transmission of heat, electric current, magnetic field, resistance to radioactivity.
