2. Fixed parts

2.1 Engine block

The engine block, also known as the crankcase, is the engine's main component (figure 2 ).

Its main functions are as follows:

  • contain cylinders ;

  • support crankshaft, cylinder head, accessories... ;

  • as a carrier for lubricating oil;

  • serve as a support for cooling water (if such a cooling system is used).

To perform these functions, the engine block must :

  • be rigid (otherwise risk of noise, sealing problems or mechanical losses);...
