7. Conclusion

Thanks to its potential, natural gas has its place among the fuels of the future. Starting from the current situation, where natural gas is used to power internal combustion engines that are mostly petrol-driven, natural gas will, in the longer term, become the fuel of choice as a viable, reliable and mass-available alternative. To achieve this, a great deal of research and development has been, and will continue to be, devoted to the development of appropriate combustion systems for every use and mode of transport. For example, direct gas injection, which remained problematic and saw its development halted in the 1990s/2000s, is being revived through European and national programs.
