The drivetrain sector has been the subject of numerous developments, particularly in recent years, driven by a number of constraints linked to customer expectations or the effects of regulations, particularly concerning carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions.
Until the late 1990s, the world of transmissions was dominated by two technologies, generally designed and manufactured by the automakers themselves: manual gearboxes and automatic planetary gearboxes. Competition was no less intense than it is today, but focused on economic performance, with design driven by costs and the use of existing manufacturing capacities.
