History

The first cultures in an artificial environment date back to the end of the 19th century. xix e century, with the discovery of the need for inorganic salt nutrients (work of botanist Famintzin in 1871). This was followed by the isolation of strains for specific cultures and the first studies on microalgal nutrition. The first intensive processes date back to the 2 of World War II, to find solutions for supplying German troops. These efforts were taken up by countries looking to microalgae as a source of protein, but soon came up against the problem of controlling cultivation parameters and defining suitable processes.
