4. Conclusion

In terms of fundamental research in enzymology, solid/gas biocatalysis enables very precise study of the effect of the microenvironment on enzyme activity and stability. It provides access to the intrinsic kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of enzymes and, more generally, to a better understanding of enzyme function at the molecular level.

From a technological point of view, the production of natural esters was the first example of large-scale application of solid/gas catalysis. Given the potential described above, other applications are likely to emerge in the medium to long term.

The specificity and selectivity of lipases could be exploited via transesterification or hydrolysis reactions for the production of high value-added molecules (resolution of racemic mixtures).
