3. New modes of action

From 1972 onwards, it wasn't enough for a product to be active to attract the interest of an increasingly crowded market; it had to offer something genuinely new to crop protection, compared with the substances currently in use.

3.1 Pyrethroids: the need to separate diastereomers

From 1974 onwards, pyrethroid insecticides were developed; these are esters built on the model of pyrethrum compounds, but made photostable by structural modifications (replacement of the two vinyl methyls of chrysanthemic acid by halogens and choice of a phenoxyphenyl for the alcoholic copula).
