2. The different areas of safety
The notion of security applies to a wide variety of fields. It can relate to acts of vandalism, intrusion or aggression (security in the suburbs or in the metro, burglaries). Security can also have a social connotation (job security, social security). In this case, it's a question of preserving a professional or financial situation. To distinguish this type of security, the English use the specific term "security".
Other aspects of safety are grouped together under the term "safety". They may concern the reliability of means of transport (train, truck or airplane accidents). Food safety is often mentioned in the media (mad cow disease, listeriosis). Domestic activities also generate a (too) high number of accidents, accounting for 18,000 deaths in France every year.
