1. Notion of "Risk
One of the key words in risk analysis is, of course, "risk". It is one of those terms used daily in everyday language, more or less interchangeably with "danger", which is also one of the key words in risk analysis. As a result, the meaning of these concepts is often unclear, even in the minds of those who use them every day. To differentiate them explicitly, it's best to consult a dictionary! As modern dictionaries are not absolutely clear when it comes to finding an unequivocal distinction, we'll turn to good old Littré, which fortunately provides us with the key:
"Risk is easily distinguished from danger because it contains less the idea of peril than that of random chance, but considered on its bad side."
This notion of risk, which is both probabilistic and pessimistic, remains surprisingly modern....
