4. Metrics and performance indicators for hazardous business sectors

4.1 Preamble

Metrics and performance indicators have been specially developed to assess the level of safety of activities considered hazardous to the safety of people and the environment. After a brief review of hazard and risk terminology, the first part of this section presents the concepts used in France for ICPE classified facilities. In the second part, the case of air and rail transport will be briefly described. In the final section, Anglo-Saxon practices in the chemical and petroleum industries will be developed and commented on.
