3. Cocktails of endocrine disruptors

One of these studies focused on the xenoreceptor PXR (cf. vide supra). Synergistic activation of this receptor was observed by a mixture of 17α-ethinyl estradiol, a constituent of the contraceptive pill, and trans-nonachlor, a pesticide, via transactivation of the CYP3A4 reporter gene. The interaction of this receptor with endocrine disruptors is thought to be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
