1. Definitions
1.1 Contamination
We restrict the term "contamination" to situations where certain decontamination techniques are required, and where the effectiveness of these techniques can be monitored.
Contamination is the deposition of solid or liquid particles on a surface. A gas can only contaminate a surface if adsorption or absorption phenomena are appreciable. If vapors condense, contamination is liquid. Contamination can therefore affect a variety of media: soil, materials and, of course, living organisms.
We exclude from the scope of this presentation pollution of water or foodstuffs, for which techniques for neutralizing toxic hazards are quite different from those discussed here. The case of air...
