4. Risk control measures to prevent BLEVE

4.1 Key prevention concepts

To prevent a reservoir BLEVE, various preventive measures and concepts are implemented on installations. In the case of a hot BLEVE, which requires prior heating of the tank, the following measures can be taken:

1. limit the duration of thermal stress:

  • ensuring early detection of the leak before it ignites,

  • early detection of leak ignition using flame detectors,

  • having the means of isolation (automatic and/or manual, to cut off the supply to the leak causing the thermal attack) or extinguishing means in the event of a fire on a neighboring installation,

  • by injecting water into the bottom...
