2. Influence of steel manufacturing process on properties
As explained above, the properties of steels are determined by heat treatment, chemical composition, chemical homogeneity, and the conformation (form factor and size) of precipitates.
The production process affects chemical homogeneity on the one hand, and the size and distribution of metallurgical components on the other.
2.1 Conventional metallurgy
Figure 2 shows a micrograph of an X35CrMoV5 steel in which the heterogeneities are visible as lighter bands: the composition of the steel in the lighter bands is different from that in the darker bands.
