1. Context

Sandwich panels owe their success primarily to the growing demand for lighter, more thermally-insulated structures, which is technically crucial in the aeronautics industry and economically essential in the building and transport sectors.

In many applications, structures are subjected to non-uniform forces across the entire cross-section of the material. In bending , for example, the end fibers are more stressed than the central parts. The use of a low-density material in the central part, and a rigid material on the faces, increases the stiffness/mass ratio. Hence the sandwich material concept.
