5. Process modeling

Polymer foam formation involves several stages:

  • dissolving gas in the polymer melt under high pressure;

  • nucleation of a population of gas bubbles in the polymer after pressure release;

  • the growth of nucleated bubbles to their final equilibrium size as the polymer solidifies;

  • stabilizing cell structure.

The density of the final foam depends on several process parameters (temperature, pressure, depressurization rate induced by mold opening speed in the case of injection molding, etc.) and is directly linked to the initial quantity of dissolved gas and the fraction of gas diffused outwards.
