The properties of a given cellular polymer depend on :
the nature of the polymer ;
apparent density ;
the manufacturing process ;
cell type;
cell diameter and wall thickness.
The intrinsic properties of the polymer, as they appear in the various monographs in the Plastics and Composites treatise to which the reader may refer, must be tempered to take account of :
the reduction in mechanical properties due to the small amount of material and the high proportion of gas;
the extreme division of the material, which results in reduced chemical resistance and a certain fragility.

Markets
The most widely used foams are polyurethanes and expanded polystyrenes, followed at a distance by PVCs, then polyolefins and phenolics. All other products are specialties whose consumption is difficult to assess. The breakdown between cellular PUR and EPS depends on the region in question.
All consumption figures are only average estimates, and other values can be found in the technical-economic literature....
