2.1.1 Raw materials and manufacturing processes
Polycrystalline graphites are obtained by mixing a powder and a binder. Powders can be petroleum cokes, coal pitch cokes (the residue of tar distillation, itself a by-product of coal pyrogenation), oil shale cokes, natural or artificial graphites, or carbon blacks. For the manufacture of nuclear-grade graphite, petroleum cokes or coal tar pitch are mainly used.
