6. Post-impact fatigue
The effect of a low-energy impact on the mechanical behavior of a composite is still difficult to grasp, and depends to a large extent on the volume fraction of fibers within the composite.
For volume fractions of the order of 60%, impacts cause delamination at the interfaces of the plies closest to the impacted zone, without however leaving any apparent manifestations on the composite surface (figure 28 ).

Commercial finite element calculation codes (ABAQUS, ANSYS...) do not perform fatigue calculations, but calculate for a given number of cycles. The material characteristics then correspond to the residual properties for the number of cycles concerned. The question then remains: for which cycles is it wise to perform these calculations? The answer can be found in the cycle skipping techniques mentioned in [AM 5 410] § 8.2....
