4. Other important properties of dielectric polymers

Depending on the environment concerned, a number of properties need to be taken into account to ensure acceptable conservation of dielectric and mechanical properties under the conditions and for the duration of the application. The most important of these are listed below.

4.1 Thermal stability

Practical heat resistance is mainly characterized by glass transition temperature, peak and continuous service temperatures, and coefficient of thermal expansion. Most polymers degrade above 200°C. A cross-linked structure (thermosets) or the presence of fluorine atoms (PTFE), silicon (silicones) or aromatic rings (polyimides) increase thermostability.
