1. Geometric description

1.1 System classification

The first criterion used to define counter-rotating twin-screw extrusion systems concerns the level of interpenetration of the two screws. A screw is said to be interpenetrated when the threads of one screw penetrate the channel of the neighboring screw, and non-interpenetrated when they do not. Figure 1 illustrates these two situations.
