5. Predictive preventive maintenance
The last preventive maintenance method used, and the ultimate stage of maintenance, is predictive maintenance (also wrongly called predictive maintenance, because although we sometimes know how to predict in maintenance, we don't make predictions!), which is "conditional maintenance carried out following a forecast obtained thanks to repeated analysis or known characteristics and an evaluation of the parameters significant for the degradation of the asset" (standard NF EN 13306). To apply such a maintenance strategy, it is necessary to have either models of the behavior of the asset concerned under its operating conditions, or a large amount of data from multiple sources that can be analyzed by artificial intelligence and/or learning algorithms, or a combination of both approaches.
