ABSTRACT

Systems are all around us. Our social, economic and industrial systems are growing ever more complex. How do we transcribe this complex world? The method proposed in this article uses system dynamics. It gives readers a tangible introduction to understanding the dynamics of systems with the intent to prompt interest in designing and implementing simulation models. The article not only highlights the techniques and tools used, but also introduces the nine phases of systems thinking and modeling methodology. Through a case study, a general application of system dynamics is discussed, and hard and soft modeling approaches are presented.

 INTRODUCTION

How can system dynamics help engineers and managers solve complex problems? What are the benefits of this approach, but also its limitations? What software tools are available to help engineers develop models?

In order to answer these three questions, we will first look at the general characteristics of system dynamics. The aim of this first chapter is to quickly immerse the reader in the definitions and concepts of system dynamics, so that in the second chapter, a methodology illustrated by a pedagogical example applied to industry can be approached and dealt with as effectively as possible. With this case study, we will be able to explore practically, and therefore usefully, each stage of the approach (from design to choice of validated scenario).

A computer model and simulation will be presented, along with numerical tools for system dynamics, in a third section entitled "Appendices".

In addition to this introduction to the dynamics of complex systems, the didactic development of this article introduces the reader to the general principles of modeling and simulation.
