 INTRODUCTION

We do not own the Earth, but borrow it from our children (Saint-Exupéry). We are therefore committed to future generations. This concept of commitment is associated with the concept of responsibility, universally taken up in conferences on the subject. This concept of responsibility lies at the heart of sustainable development.

Sustainable development is wrongly seen as a Pandora's box. Environmental professionals, in particular, have clearly defined its scope, which includes several principles, such as the precautionary principle. With new processes, new product requirements and rethought organizations, sustainable development is a concept that has concrete applications in engineering. From a philosophical fad to a political and societal one, it has become a determining factor in corporate strategy.

New processes: vibratory plastic bonding processes in automotive construction. This has significantly reduced the need for adhesives and solvents.

New product requirements: the diesel particulate filter, largely developed by Rhône-Poulenc (now Aventis) in response to both political and societal demands.

Re-engineered organizations: this is the case for organizations that have opted for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 (environment) or Eco Audit certification, ISO TS 16949 and so on.
