3. Variability
Variability represents the range of observed variations in a given characteristic. Observations may be consecutive or distributed over time. It is important to know the sampling method (100% measurement or sampling).
For process control, it is often necessary to know the modes of adjustment by separating variability into two parameters: dispersion and centering (figure 12 ). Variability represents a domain, while dispersion represents only the width of the domain.
Variability is data that suppliers can use to check whether they can satisfy a request, by looking at what they have already done.
Industrialists use the terms reproducibility or repeatability to refer to the variability of a process, but...
