 INTRODUCTION

At first glance, the situation of the road haulage industry might appear to be flourishing: significant and steady growth in activity and employment, significant productivity gains, the leading mode of freight transport...

And yet, all is not well in this sector. From a social point of view, working hours remain long and wages fairly low. There is a wide disparity between the situation of the large, well-established companies and that of the more fragile subcontractors. And the importance of transport in an economy where flows are increasingly tense has increased the sector's vulnerability to the recurrent social crises that rock the road haulage industry.

The mode is also increasingly criticized for its environmental impact, its integration into the city, its contribution to road safety, and all the inconveniences and nuisances it causes.

The aim here is to describe the situation of the road haulage industry as it can be assessed through various recent surveys and technical literature on the sector.
