In the hospital environment, given the sheer number of patients, operators, products and processes to be tracked, and the constant availability of care (7 days a week, 24 hours a day), only computerized data acquisition can meet these needs. In many cases, there are specific tools for specific professions, but because of the lack of effective interoperability between them, only certain sectors are perfectly tracked. A true information system, providing a link between all business tools, has yet to be created. The hospital pharmacist is responsible for a large number of traceability functions in the areas of drugs, medical gases, single-use sterile medical devices and multiple-use re-sterilizable medical devices.
